Phillips/Pella Expert Team on Historical Fiction
Travail and Triumph is the non-stop, action-packed sequel to A House Divided.

Anna's beloved mistress Katrina has finally found the love of her life... now she and her new husband are expecting a baby. But will the little one be born into a home of laughter and joy... or to the wrecked ruinage of a once prosperous family?

Sergei's long anticipated book brings on unexpected criticism... and tragedy. Can the house of Fedorcenko stand against the overwhelming wave of trouble? Will Anna's faith in God bring her and those she loves to an end of triumph?

A must-read for every lover of history and adventure!

Continuous great work
Pella and Phillips never seem to disappoint with this series. I recommend all seven books with five stars.

Passion, Politics, and Prejudice!
I found this book to be a wonderful continuance of the Russian saga. At first I was upset about Princess Katrina, but it really turns out for the best. Anna and Sergei raise Mariana to have the wonderful blended qualities of them both. Dimitri leaves to find the measure of the man he never would own up to be. And we leave them again, in a humble cottage in Katyk, right where we started.

Great, great, great book
This is the book that started my lifelong fascination with the Lincoln assassination story, at age 7! I couldn't read much then, but the many, many photographs are so evocative that they managed to convey the tragic, haunting story all on their own. This book was originally published in 1865 (the centennial of the assassination) and is probably the prototype for serious overviews of this topic. The authors were renowned Lincoln scholars and archivists, and their love and expertise for the subject is reflected not only in the moving collection of images but also in the intelligent, well written text. If you're at all interested in this topic, this is the best book out there!

So helpful! The photographs and information are AMAZING!!!
If you are looking for a wonderful way to do a project or are just interested in Lincoln and America's reaction to his assassination, this is the book to look at. It was wonderful to read, and the pictures earned me an A on my presentation!

Best Photo-History of Abraham Lincoln's Assassination
This book has hundreds of photographs related to Abraham Lincoln's assassination and funeral train. Its written description of events from April 14, 1865, to May 4, 1865, is outstanding. This book is by far the best of its kind.

The Village Herbalist: Sharing Plant Medicines With Your Family and Community

A Refreshing Point of View
This book is so in line with my own philosophy regarding herbalism! Very interesting, appealing to both experienced and newcomers alike. I've decided to use this book as the main text for the herbal course that I teach. It was hard not to rush through it in one night, and I, too, had to force myself to savor every page :)

Complete Guide to Practicing Community Herbalism
The Village Herbalist is a long overdue love letter to all of us who serve our communities as herbalists.
Covering every aspect of herbal practice, from setting up a business, practical tips, information on making preparations, to questions of ethical practices and some of the internal/political struggles concerning the herbal community, this book will give those interested in herbalism as a livlihood a good sense of what to expect.
My favorite aspect of "The Village Herbalist" is the many profiles of practicing herbalists scattered throughout the book, along with quotes from other herbalists concerning their opinions on the various topics covered.
My initial reaction was to sit down and devour this attractive and well illustrated book, but my instincts told me to read slowly and savor it instead.

A Must Read!
"I just speed-read The Village Herbalist! I couldn't put it down. It's so wonderful. I wish I could make everyone I know read it so that they could understand why I want to follow the path of the herbalist! It's all in there."

Extremely Fascinating
This book is absolutely fantastic. Prince Phillip Koko Ijoma covers a wide range of interesting issues: supernatural, voodooism, African tribal animism etc. It is rich in African culture. This is a must read book for all lovers of unique horror story. It dwells into ritualistic ceremonies and the significance of those ceremonies. It gives the reader a reason for the acts horror and ends with lessons to be learned. A very good read for social studies and horror fans alike. One of the best horror books I've Read.

Great Book
The tales of wisdom, voodoo, spirituality, justice, and African culture narrated in "Visions from the Dark World" demonstrate how good and evil constantly struggle to dominate human existence. The author portrays the great cosmic battle between good and evil as a means of obtaining greater insight into human existence and awareness of possibilities presented by other dimensions.

Prince Phillip Koko Ijoma does a stellar job of portraying how evil can lurk in the most innocent settings while good can exist in the most horrible settings. With snippets of ancient Ikot-Ana history interspersed throughout this well-written book the author vividly chronicles the chilling tales of horror, mystery, spiritualism, and voodoo that occur in rural Nigeria. The coming of age tales in "Visions from the Dark World"is brilliant, exciting, fabulous, fantastic, fun, imaginative, interesting, suspenseful, uninhibited, and wild. This book truly captures the essence of Africa.

WedgeWorks II, The 3-D Mariner's Compass
Published in Paperback by Phillips Fiber Art (01 January, 1999)
Author: Cheryl Phillips
Average review score:

recommended by the Accidental Quilter
I made a traditional Mariner's Compass block. It took me two all day classes and many nights at home too. It was pretty, but I vowed never to make another.
Then I bought Cheryl's book with her plastic wedge templates.
Her directions are clear and it's easy to cut exact with her templates. These are really big squares too--about 20 inches and very suitable for a center medalion.
It was actually fun to make this Mariner's Compass.
I'm glad I bought this book and I'll be making more of this pattern.

It was much easier than I thought!
I have considered myself to be an intermediate quilter, not highly advanced. I was afraid of trying this, but am involved in a family quilt project and this compass was "assigned" to me.
I worked on it and found the instructions made perfect sense. Once I figured out the technique, I was able to do it! I'm impressed!
My compass block looks great, lies flat and I am proud of it!

You can't miss with precise directions and tools too!
Cheryl Phillips' WedgeWorks II 3-D Mariner's Compass is a book with concise directions and the tools are even included! The illustrations show exactly where to place the tools on the fabric and how to assemble the pieces precisely. My first 3-D compass block was assembled with the most accurate result I could have wished for! Cheryl's book describes an innovative, folded triangle method to achieve a traditional mariner's compass quilt block. It is soooooo easy and fun...the results are quite impressive! This book is a "must have" for every quilter's library.

Zoey Phillips (Harlequin Superromance, No. 1020)
Published in Paperback by Harlequin (November, 1901)
Author: Judith Bowen
Average review score:

Great Fun!
Judith Bowen scores again with the fun-filled, emotional Zoey Phillips, her latest book from Harlequin Superromance! Zoey Phillips is the first book in Judith's new Girlfriends series, in which three friends decide to accept a challenge and look up their first love.

Zoey's in for more than she reckons when she meets up with Ryan, her still-single first love. But the fun doesn't stop there. Ryan has a brother, Cam, a single dad. The brothers couldn't be more different, and Zoey likes them both. If you were a fan of the movie Sabrina, this book is definitely for you! You'll enjoy this wonderful book, and, if you're like me, you'll be anxiously waiting for the next two books in the series, Charlotte Moore and Lydia Lane.

An enjoyable contemporary romance
A decade ago Zoey Phillips, Charlotte Moore, and Lydia Lane met as members of the Jasper Park Lodge female summer staff. They stayed in contact with one another over the years and now attend the tenth anniversary event at the lodge. Another attendee suggests everyone look up their first love, but Zoey has no plans to seek out her teenage crush Ryan Donelly. However, six months later fate intercedes when a close friend asks Zoey to come home to help her with her stepmother's wedding. The Toronto-based independent book editor agrees to return to Stoney Creek, British Columbia.

At home, Zoey sees Ryan, but though attracted to him, she dreams of his older brother, rancher Cameron, father of a little girl. While Ryan flirts with Zoey, Cam melts her with his deadly bedroom eyes, leaving her bewildered by her deepening feelings for a precious girl and her father. However, Cam was burned once in a relationship before so commitment seems unlikely on his part.

The first of three "Girlfriend" tales, ZOEY PHILLIPS is an enjoyable contemporary romance that showcases relationships in a small Canadian town. The story line is simplistic but engages the audience, as Zoey is quite a lead character, one who is so confident in the big cosmopolitan city, but has doubts fitting in her own hometown. Cam is a typical category male, but his daughter keeps him off of a pedestal for hunks so that Zoey and readers sees the complete person. Judith Bowen's opening gamut is a fun read.

Absolutely charming -- Highly recommended
Zoey Phillips, Charlotte Moore, and Lydia Lane met just after high school while working at a wilderness resort in the Rocky Mountains. Ten years later at the reunion of the Jasper Park Lodger summer staff, someone speculates what fun it might be to look up the boy that led to their first heartbreak. Perhaps he's balding, paunchy, and boring. Then at the next year's reunion, they'd all report their results. Zoey doesn't think about it again until six months later when she accepts a friend's invitation to help plan her stepmother's wedding.

Sitting in a restaurant in Stony Creek, British Columbia, Zoey immediately recognizes her high school crush from across the room. Ryan Donnelly, the handsome track star of Fullerton Valley High, had convinced her to "pretend" to be his girlfriend so he make the object of his desires jealous. Zoey's dream that Ryan might realize she was the girl of his dreams went unrealized. But she'd never forgotten the boy who taught her to French kiss. Now Ryan enthusiastically greets Zoey, once he recognizes her, making her feel every bit the gauche teenager she once was.

Zoey intends to stay in town for five weeks, but the hotel is closing for the season, leaving her without adequate accommodations. When Ryan's brother Cameron hears she needs a place, he offers the ranch's garage apartment. He also intends to play matchmaker and see his brother settled. Cameron is nothing like his younger, flirtatious brother. Cameron, a single father, is steady, reliable, boring. So why does Zoey find herself drawn to the wrong brother?

While the plot might be a bit predictable, that in no ways detracts from the fun of ZOEY PHILLIPS. The premise is wonderful, as are the characterizations. Any return to the past is fraught with risk, and Zoey meets those risks head on, with her own zany style. As she undercuts Cameron's desire to control everyone and everything around him, Zoey demonstrates admirable self confidence and pride with the woman she's made herself into, from her choice of names and career, to her darkened auburn hair; too bad she knows nothing about men. Consequently, she becomes perfect foil for the brooding, silent hero in a balance of light and shadow. Highly recommended.

Artsie Craftsie
Since I have become an avid crafter and enjoyed selling some of the items I have made with my own hands, this book has given me a tool by which to expand my craftyness all over the place. I was introduced to this book by a wonderful woman who has been weaving baskets for 20+ years, Melissa. She moved out of our area and left the book behind me to enjoy the pleasures of people raving over works I created. It is a great tool for those who need a place to start. There is just one downfall, no fault of the publisher, not all events in your state are listed. Too bad for them!!! However, you can find out how to register and get involved by the little known publishings your area puts out. On a wider scale, if you are traveling you can plan a trip and make some dough and possibly write the expense off. This is a great book.

Everything you need to know to find the perfect shows
This book contains the location, dates, application deadlines, expected attendance, booth price, size of booth, who the show is geared to, if there is a fee for the public to get in the show, how many booths there will be, if there will be food or not, and what else will be going on at the show such as parades, games, entertainment, ect. The BEST book I've ever found to plan sucessful shows to participate in. You WILL be happy with this book. I am eagerly looking forward to the 2001 edition!

Accountability in Human Resource Management (Improving Human Performance Series)
Published in Hardcover by Gulf Professional Publishing (01 January, 1996)
Author: Jack J. Phillips
Average review score:

A reference book on measurement and evaluation for HR
"During the last decade, the Human Resources (HR) function experienced drastic change in its role, status, and influence". Jack J. Phillips writes, "Some HR executives recognized the change and stepped up to the challenge. A panel of top-level HR executives recently assembled by Personnel Journal agreed that HR is moving away from the transactional, paper-pushing, hiring/firing support function it has been and is becoming a bottom-line business decision maker...Peter Drucker predicted these changes in The Wall Street Journal over ten years ago when he asserted that the personnel department, in addition to changing its name to human resources, must behave quite differently and follow the line mode of behavior rather than the staff mode"(pp.1-5).And hence, he rightly argues that "from recent articles, reports, books, and interviews on the subject, seven trends can be identified that have a significant impact on an organization's bottom-line results and the HR function's role in the process. These trends include the increased importance of the HR function, increased accountability, organizational change and quality programs, improvement in productivity, adoption of HR strategies, growing use of HR's information systems, and reliance on partnership relationships. Collectively these trends enhance or complement the efforts of the HR department to monitor and improve its contribution to organizational performance" (pp.5-6).

Within this context, he divides his book into four parts as follows:

Part I- presents a general framework for evaluating the HR function (Chapters 1-2)

Part II- presents the issues involved in developing a results-based approach to HR (Chapters 3-4)

Part III- focuses on specific ways to measure the contribution of HR (Chapters 5-9)

Part IV- explores data analysis and presentation results.

One of the core concepts of the book, in Chapter 1, he focuses on paradigm shifts from traditional HR approach to a more results-based approach demanded in today's environment, and summarizes these paradigm shifts necessary for a results-based approach as follows:

Traditional Approach:

(1) New programs initiated by request or suggestion of any significant manager or group.

(2) A maltitude of programs in all areas.

(3) Existing programs are rarely, if ever, eliminated or changed.

(4) Count activities, hours of involvement, number of employees involved, etc.

(5) Limited management involvement in the HR process.

(6) HR viewed as cost center.

(7) HR staff unfamiliar with operations issues.

(8) HR staff lack knowledge of finance and business concepts.

Results-Based Approach:

(1) New programs initiated only after a legitimate need is established.

(2) Fewer programs with greater opportunity to make an impact.

(3) Existing programs are regularly reviewed and eliminated when necessary.

(4) Measure the impact of programs on the organization.

(5) Extensive involvement and collaboration with management.

(6) HR is viewed as an investment in employees.

(7) HR staff very knowledgeable about operations issues.

(8) HR staff versed in basic finance and business concepts.

I highly recommend this invaluable study to all HR executives.

Tracking success in HRpractitioners need this book.
This important work shows you how to take a results-oriented approach to human resources. It explains how to develop programs with an emphasis on accountability, determine the costs of HR programs, calculate the return on investment, design data collection instruments and techniques for evaluation, and strengthen management's commitment to HR efforts. The author presents a nine-step model to analyze, develop, and implement programs and illustrates its use. He also presents a methodology for measuring overall effectiveness of HR. This book shows how to benchmark against other organizations. Comprehensive and useful. Overall, tracking success is crucial for HR practitioners to understand and do! Ergo, HR practitioners need this book.

George MacDonald's best!
I have read other books by George MacDonald, some of which were translted by Micheal Philips, and this one is by far the best, though they are all great! Micheal Philips translates George MacDonald best out of the translaters that I have come across. George is the best author I've ever came across.

Anatomy and Physiology (Cliffs Quick Review)

Author: Phillip E. Pack
Average review score:

good reference,
This is a good summary of anatomy and physiology if you don't have time to read the textbook. It is written in an easy to understand style. It can help in learning some information. If you want to know the kind of questions asked on exams in college anatomy and physiology class, get the following which is also [available]:
Anatomy and Physiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations (Vol 1 ISBN: 0971999619) (Vol 2 ISBN: 0971999627). I used these three books and they helped me get an "A" in my A and P class. When my friend took an A and P class at another college, she used these 3 books and also got an "A". I rest my case. Get these three books.

Worth getting for all A&P Students
I bought this book shortly after my first A&P Exam, which I did very well on. I made my own summary notes of each chapter in my A&P book and it took hours. Then I saw this book and was amazed at how detailed and easy-to-understand most of the information is. I could've saved alot of time if I had this book. I think it's a great addition to any A&P book.
